Unique sport, art & cultural development prog. for tribal communities

The Tribal Development Council will launch a unique Sport, Art & Cultural development Programme for the tribal communities of Andaman & Nicobar Island. The Council will initiate the programme with a two-day Pilot Project at Port Blair on Oct 16 and 17. A 3-KM Run for boys and girls will mark the launch of the programme on October 17 at 4 pm, which will be flagged off by the Secretary (Sports/Edn) Mr D Manikandan. The Tribal Development Council is extremely happy to announce the cooperation and encouragement it has received from New Delhi YMCA. The two senior members of the Governing Body of the New Delhi YMCA will be in Port Blair on both the days to formalise the Council’s programme. Mr Norris Pritam, a senior sport journalist, is a Vice President of New Delhi YMCA. He is also Chairman of the Sports Committee of New Delhi YMCA. He was also a founder member of the Special Area Games Scheme, launched by Sports Authority of India in 1985. Mr Aloke Michyari is also a member of the Board of Directors of New Delhi YMCA and Chairman of its Saat Taal International Camp Site Committee.  Both Mr Pritam and Mr Michyari have vast experience in conducting sporting and cultural events in the country. The two facilitators will suggest the Council ways and means to get optimum benefit from resources available in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Mr Pritam and Mr Michyari will interact with the officials of the Tribal Development Council, officers of the Directorate of Sport and related persons on Oct 16 besides having a session with the local media. The Pilot Project will lay the foundation of bigger cooperation between Tribal Development Council and New Delhi YMCA. In coming years, talented young athletes from Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be picked up and sent for further grooming to New Delhi with assistance from New Delhi YMCA. Similarly, for talented youngsters in performing art and cultural areas, Mr Vijay Milton from New Delhi YMCA could be a big asset. Mr Milton is a well-known singer, composer and filmmaker. He has already agreed in principle to conduct workshops in music and film making for youngsters of our region.
