Workshop on distribution of fishing inputs

Fisheries Science Division (FSD) of ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute in association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Car Nicobar conducted one day “Workshop cum Distribution of Fishing Inputs to Tribal Fishermen under TSP” recently at Tribal Council Building, Big Lapathy, Car Nicobar. Altogether, 50 fishermen participated in the workshop. Fifteen numbers 4 HP OBM engines were distributed to tribal fishermen by Mr Martin Luther, Secretary, Tribal Council who was the chief guest of the event in the presence of representatives from departments of Fisheries, Car Nicobar. Demonstrations on maintenance and use of 2 stroke and 4 stroke OBM engines and awareness on modern fishing techniques and safety at sea was also provided  during the workshop. Mr Luther lauded ICAR-CIARI for its relentless efforts for development of tribal community.
Beside, a one day training on use of GPS was also conducted on Aug 1 and 2 at Tribal Council Building, Big Lapathy and Kinyuka Village, Car Nicobar respectively. Altogether, 24 fishermen from six villages participated and got benefited from the training programme at Big Lapathy. Mr Martin Luther, Secretary, Tribal Council urged the fishermen to gain good knowledge in use of GPS which will help them in safe navigation and profitable fishing.
Altogether 29 tribal fishermen participated in the training programme at Kinyuka Village. Mr Rodrick Alfred, 1st Headman, Kinyuka Village was the chief guest of the programme. He thanked CIARI for conducting the training programme in their village and urged the participants to gain knowledge. The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for profitable and safe fishing was taught to the tribal fishermen through demonstration. They were also sensitized regarding the advanced technologies in marine fishing.
The programs were conducted under the guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI. Mr K. Lohith Kumar, Scientist from Fisheries Science Division, ICAR-CIARI and Mr Sanjeev Kumar Singh Mohamed Sarief from KVK, Car Nicobar were part of the workshop and training programme.
