World Health Day on April 7

The Directorate of Health Services, A&N Administration will observe  “World Health Day” on April 7 on the theme “Depression : Let’s talk” in A& N Islands along with rest of the world to create awareness about Depression and its prevention.
To mark the occasion, the Health Department will organise awareness programme on April 7 throughout A &N Islands for prevention and management of depression involving PRIs, paramedical personnel, AWWs, youth clubs, students and ASHAs to create awareness  among the general public  about depression and its associate mental disorder. The state-level function will be held at Panchayat  Samiti Hall, Ferrargunj, South Andaman on April 7 at 10.30 am. Dr. Sunil Kumar, Consultant, Dept. of Psychiatry, G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair will deliver a talk on ‘Depression’ and its associate mental disorders.
Depression is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, decreased energy, feelings of guilt or low self worth, disturbed sleep or appetite and poor concentration. Moreover, depression often comes with symptoms of anxiety. Depression can happen to anybody and it often strikes at an adolescent age. It causes mental anguish and affects person’s ability to carry out every day task, a release from Dr Navin Govind, Deputy Director (HE &FW) said.
