Even as the Regional Sports Council (RSC), Rangat strives to promote sports in the region, acute shortage of funds continues to foil the efforts of the Council. As per reports, the concerned agency in the local administration did not sanction any funds for the Sports Council in the past two years nor provided sports articles as a result of which the Council failed to conduct any sports event in the region for the past several months. Budding sportspersons in the region are now demanding that a government official like the Assistant Commissioner of Rangat be made the Chairman of Regional Sports Council of Rangat zone so that the government nominee can coordinate with the local government to ensure timely allocation of funds for the Council.
As per information, the Regional Sports Council of Rangat Zone was reconstituted in the year 2016-17 with the Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, North and Middle Andaman District at Chairman, Deputy Education Officer of Middle Andaman as Secretary and other government officials. As elections for the post of Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad is held every year, the seat of Chairman, Regional Sports Council of Rangat is occupied by a new incumbent every year leading to serious lack of coordination between the Council and local government for timely allocation of funds.
“Unlike Regional Sports Council, Rangat, the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman is the Chairman of Regional Sports Council, Mayabunder, which get regular funds for promotion of sports activities in the region. But for the prevailing situation at Rangat, there has been no allocation of funds for the past two years and some sports activities were conducted utilizing funds from the Department of Education. Villagers here are demanding that the Assistant Commissioner of Middle Andaman should be made the Chairman of the Regional Sports Council, Rangat for smooth functioning of the Council,” said some residents of Rangat.
