Incessant rain over the past few days has thrown normal life out of gear in the Middle Andaman region. The heavy downpour triggered flooding in the nallah at Rampur causing landslide at Medical Road on Thursday. In another incident, mudslide occurred at Janakpur village near Old Labour Commissioner Office on Friday. There are, however, no reports of causalities from any part of the region. Officials of the Andaman Public Works Division and Zilla Parishad member, Ms Prabhawati Biswas reached the spot to assess the situation and assured villagers to carry out necessary steps to prevent such incidents in future.
“Medical road at Ramput is vulnerable to mudslides, but authorities have failed to embark on remedial measures to prevent the occurrence. The nallah overflows during heavy rains and inundates the main road causing problems to commuters. The landslide reached the main road on Thursday after which the APWD took steps to construct a temporary retaining wall with iron pipes and other materials. The temporary arrangement is likely to cause further damage the road which connects Parnashala to the Community Health Centre here besides causing hardships to hundreds of commuters in the region. The APWD should take permanent measures to prevent landslides here for the safety of villagers,” said some residents of Rangat.
