The only major sports arena in the Middle Andaman region is a sorry tale of administrative apathy. Since establishment, the Mini Stadium located at Rangat remains neglected by the authorities. The stadium, which also has a Gymnasium and Changing Room facility for sports persons, is presently in shambles and locals in the region are decrying the concerned authorities for poor management. As per reports, the stadium is under the control of the Youth Affairs department and utilised at times by the PWD Recreation Club, Regional Sports Council, Education Department for conducting block or zonal level sports tourneys. Presently, one daily rated worker has been engaged for watch and ward duties while other built-up infrastructure and routine maintenance of the stadium remains far from ensured.
“The mini stadium at Rangat has remained in a pathetic state for the past several months. Organizers of cricket tournaments conducted here in the recent months were asked to carry out all maintenance and ground clearing works. The Gym and Changing Room available in the stadium has been locked for the past more than ten years. There are power poles fixed, but not electric lamps installed. Watching day and night games at the stadium remains a distant dream for villagers in the Middle Andaman region. It’s absolute waste of public money and the locals here now deter to venture anywhere near the stadium, which has been converted into a den of anti-social elements,” said some Rangat residents.
