While the local government stresses on optimal utilization of taxpayers’ money allocated for the progress of these islands, an unused building of the Civil Supplies Department in Middle Andaman tells the sorry state of affairs towards effective implementation in this regard. Constructed after incurring lakhs from the government treasury, the Godown of the Civil Supplies Department at Rangat Bay, Middle Andaman has been rendered a wasted facility and serving no purpose presently.
As per reports, the storehouse constructed by the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs of the UT Administration was meant to store PDS items like rice, wheat, sugar etc for beneficiaries in the region. However, the structure has remained under unutilized for the past many months in blatant abuse of public money, say sources.  “The Middle Andaman region is home of a population of thousands, which could have been benefited if the Godown of the Civil Supplies Department was put to use. Recurring shortage of PDS items at Fair Price Shops has been a concern for the people here and one is forced to wait for days to procure the essential commodities till supplies arrive from other areas in the district. It’s sheer waste of taxpayers’ money as the building after being constructed from government funds has been left to ruins,” said a villager of Nimbutala.
“The condition of the building is deteriorating with every passing day. Without any supervision from the authorities, the structure has become home to the wild.  The building looks strong and concrete from outside and if the present condition is to be believed, the structure could be utilized for any other public purpose. The authorities concerned should take a strong note of the situation and take appropriate steps in the larger interest of the remote population here,” added another.
