ZP’s community asset at Parnashala in dire straits
After Sabari, another case of gross abuse of government funds has come to light from the Middle Andaman region. Constructed more than five years ago by the Zilla Parishad at Parnashala, the Community Hall now wears a deserted look. As a result of complete failure of the Zilla Parishad to ensure optimal utilisation of the community asset, the Parnashala Community Hall has remained marred for lack of proper maintenance and almost all electrical equipment installed in the hall have been stolen from the RCC building.
According to reports, Zilla Parishad of North and Middle Andaman constructed the facility five years ago. Equipped with all basic facilities, the community hall at Parnashala was thrown open for public use for some days after its inauguration. But for reasons best known to the government authorities, the community hall has remained completely unutilised for the past several years due to lack of maintenance and power supply. Electrical equipments like fans etc have been stolen from the community hall and no efforts have been made to install the necessary appliances till date. The former member of Zilla Parishad, Mr Devan Rao initiated steps to fit tiles in the community hall two years ago. The since then, the community hall has remained a sorry tale of government apathy.
“Inauguration of the Parnashala Community Hall came as a big respite for the villagers here. Located at a prime location, the Panchayat building was expected to serve the people here, but it did not serve any purpose as the building has been left abandoned due to the inattention of the authorities. Miscreants plundered with electrical equipment installed in the building. But, the Panchayat authorities never bothered to make available the community hall for public use like marriage functions or other social events. The building is now in a poor shape. Owing to lack of maintenance, the structure is getting rusty. Some illegal activities have also been reported from the deserted building. It’s a sheer misuse of government funds and the local administration should take immediate steps to renovate the building and ensure its optimal use which will also generate revenue for the Zilla Parishad here,” demanded some villagers of Parnashala.
