The National Highway-10 was closed on Friday for about thre hours as a heavy landslide blocked the roads at Bhotey Bhir, 42 kms from the state capital, Gangtok, towards West Bengal. With tourism season at its peak in Sikkim, passengers travelling to Siliguri from Gangtok were hard hit by the slide and had to struggle to catch their scheduled flights, trains or buses.
Some taxis ferrying passengers completed their journey taking an alternative route via Monsong-Kalimpong-Chitray, but it took two hours more than the usual time. SDM, Rangpo Prem Kamal Rai and SHO, Rangpo Keshang Bhutia made a spot visit along with other police officials. Talking to the correspondent, SDM, Rangpo said the administration was trying to help the stranded tourists on the way. He emphasized on the value of the tourist season to Sikkim.
Though the debris were cleared by 1pm with equipment provided by Madhya Bharat Power Corporation, the traffic snarl was experienced throughout the day at different spots on the highway. (EOIC)
