The Budget session of Meghalaya Assembly will start tomorrow with the customary address by Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
Chief minister Mukul Sangma will present the budget on March 15 and the session will end on March 24, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly commissioner Andrew Simons said. Mukul Sangma is also set to become the second chief minister to complete a full term since the state was carved out, the first being State Planning Board chairman S C Marak in the 1990s. Sangma had held the post since 2010 when he replaced senior Congress leader D D Lapang and again in 2013 when the Congress won the maximum number of seats.
The budget session which ends on March 24 next, is significant in view of the state preparing to go to poll early next year. Leader of Opposition and United Democratic Party (UDP) chief Donkupar Roy said issues of development, safety of women, education and funds constraints will be taken up against the government.
National Peoples Party spokesperson and Opposition chief whip James K Sangma said he will surely take up the sex racket involving a 14-year-old girl in which one of the legislators was also jailed.
