A meeting was held by the Bihari Kalyan Manch, Siliguri with the Chhath committees of the city’s piers at a building in Burdwan Road on Sunday.
During the meeting, a special committee was formed to protest against instructions given by the Green Tribunal. Sources shared that the committee has decided to submit a demand to the SDO and the Police Commissioner as well. They will also contact state tourism minister Goutam Deb, and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, if no appropriate action is taken. Bihari Kalyan Manch’s Secretary, Karmvir Singh, shared that Chhath Puja is connected with the river. He also said that the official instructions given by the Police Commissioner to the Chhath committee have enraged the members.
Every year, the committees clean the rivers before the Puja. Moreover, Singh said that Bihari Kalyan Manch is the only organisation which organises environment and river protection campaigns from time to time.
