Buddha Jayanti declared public holiday
More than 80 members of the All Bengal Buddhist Development Committee gathered at Bagdogra airport today to thank chief minister Mamata Banerjee for declaring Buddha Jayanti a public holiday.
The banners and placards they were carrying read: Thank you chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The chief minister left for Kolkata in the afternoon after her Kalimpong tour.
Ratan Bomzon, the ABBDC assistant secretary, said, "This historical announcement has become possible only due to the unity of all Buddhists and well-wishers."
He said they had submitted a memorandum to the chief minister on February 14 in Kalimpong seeking a public holiday on Buddha Jayanti.
Bomzon said that on March 19, more than 1 lakh Buddhists from all corners of Bengal will march for peace from Darjeeling More to Bagajatin Park to thank the chief minister.
There are 19 Buddhist organisations including those of the Adivasi, Barua, Vante and Bengali communities and they had been demanding the public holiday by holding meetings in several places including in Kolkata.
