In a major breakthrough, the CID today arrested Jalpaiguri Child Protection Officer Sushmita Ghosh in connection with the recent child trafficking case and her alleged involvement in selling children, both within the country and abroad. Sushmita was picked up from the office of a local NGO named Bimala Sishu Griho.
Last week, Sushmita's husband, Darjeeling district child protection officer Mrinal Ghosh, and Debasish Chanda, a doctor and member of the Darjeeling Child Welfare Committee, and former BJP Mahila Morcha leader Juhi Chowdhury were arrested in the same case.
Sushmita was arrested after being suspended from her post on Monday afternoon.
Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Rachna Bhagat said Sushmita was suspended from her post as she was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation to the show-cause notice issued by the district administration for her alleged irregularities.
Since Sushmita's name was also involved in the child trafficking racket, she was called today by the CID at Pintail Village and after arrested after interrogation.
It may be mentioned here that Mrinal Ghosh, the first government officer to be arrested in the case, was felicitated by the state government in Kolkata last year for his work.
Earlier, the CID also arrested Chandana Chakroborty, her brother Manas Chakraborty and Sonali Mondal at Bimala Sishu Griho and Ashray that housed more than 17 kids.
