Gold bars worth 18 cr seized from Siliguri

Siliguri is considered the gateway to India’s Northeast, and gold smugglers in particular are using the town’s vantage position for their clandestine activities.
On Saturday Directive Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Siliguri wing seized 55 kgs of gold and arrested two persons in connection with the case. According to DRI officials the seized gold’s international value is 18 crores 16 lakhs 65 thousand. The gold made in Australia and Switzerland was being smuggled from Bhutan to Siliguri via Jaigaon border.
Tradip Saha, Lawyer of DRI informed that Ganesh Bhagwan Kute and NabnathKallappa Kute both resident of Maharashtra were arrested with gold from Siliguri’s Bardwan Raod area today early morning. He said that 55 pieces of gold bar each weighing 1 kg were hidden in a four wheeler private vehicle.
Saha also said that since two years 480 kgs of gold has been seized from Siliguri area. Using Siliguri as a corridor and several routes in North Bengal, smugglers ferry gold illegally on a large scale. Using Nepal, Bhutan, Mynamar and China border the gold is smuggled to Siliguri and then to Kolkata and other parts of the country on 8th August this year.

DRI seized 6 kg 800 grams of gold and arrested two persons from Siliguri. Ngindosianmang (29) and Kapliansanga (20) both resident of Aizwal were arrested along with gold.
July 12 2018:
DRI, Siliguri arrested four persons from a hotel of Pradhannagar, located opposite of Tenzing Norgey Central Bus Terminus on Thursday afternoon and seized 10.5 kilo gold bars worth Rs 3.5 crore. All arrested persons are residents of Aizwal of Mizoram and carrying the gold bars in their waist belt and inside he shoes.

DRI seized 10kgs of gold from Fulbari area of Siliguri.Two persons were arrested by Siliguri police. The gold bars that weighed 1kg each were handed over by Bhutan nationals at Phunstsholing to duo. The market value of seizure gold is Rs.  3.18 crore according to DRI officials.

DRI on seized 5 kgs of gold bars worth Rs 1.5 crores and arrested three persons in connection with gold smuggling. The seizure was made from Sampark Kanti Express at New Jalpaiguri station.
