Heavy storm hits Siliguri, one killed, thousands affected

One person was killed and thousands affected following heavy rains since Sunday morning at several areas of Jalpaiguri and Siliguri.
Narayan Mondol was killed when the wall of the room of Green Wood Apartment where he lived collapsed this morning.
A portion of an under Construction Bridge in Samarnagar of  Siliguri collapsed early morning.
Due to heavy rainfall in Hills and Siliguri several areas were waterlogged in Matigra, Salbari, Mothibari, Bagdogra, Pati Colony, Adarshnagar and other areas of Siliguri and Jalpaiguri districts.
Dooars region under Alipurduar district is also affected due to flood like situation in several regions. Nagarkata area has been mostly affected in Dooars.
River Mahananda of Siliguri and Torsha in Jalpaiguri rivers are  overflowing and the situation can be fatal at any moment.
Silguri Mayor and MLA Ashok Bhattacharya visited the flood affected area since morning. Local government authority has alerted people in several areas.
Darjeeling District Magistrate Joyeshree Dasgupta said, “Patherghatta area under Matigara block near Siliguri is more affected while the situation in other areas is under control.''
The train services were also affected due to heavy rainfall since last night. Seven long distance trains had to be cancelled, two trains short-terminated and four trains had to be diverted because of damage to the tracks in Alipurduar division.
According to the Northern Frontier officials due to incessant rain railway embankment was damaged between Carron and Banarhat stations of Alipurduar division on Sunday night following which few trains were cancelled.
