Illegal construction demolished in Siliguri despite resistance

Officials of Siliguri municipal corporation (SMC) faced a stiff resistance while demolishing an illegally constructed two-storied building at ward no. 5 today.
Recently, SMC started a drive against the illegal constructions in the city. The house was spotted and the workers of the building department of the civic body led by an engineer went to the spot with to demolish the building. They were accompanied by police personnel.
While they started demolishing the building, Amarjit Singh, owner of the construction and his family members started strongly resisting the workers of the civic body. A scuffle between them followed.
According to the engineer of the SMC, owner of the illegal building was warned after the matter came to the notice of SMC authority. He was asked to demolish the building in compliance with the directive.
“But as he refused we were compelled to demolish the construction by our workers,” he said.
A large contingent of police had to be rushed to the spot to maintain law and order during the demolition.
Asok Bhattacharya, SMC mayor said that such drives against unauthorized and illegal constructions would continue. “We take all necessary steps in this regard,” Bhattacharya said. (EOIC)
