India lifts SAFF trophy

The Indian women’s football team scored three goals to win the SAFF Women’s Championship 2016 on Wednesday evening at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. India has never lost in the SAFF championships and this is the fourth win.

Pitted against strong opponents Bangladesh, India’s Dangmei Grace scored the first goal in the 12th minute. After a lull, Sasmita Mallick scored through a penalty in the 62nd minute with Indumathi Kathiresan following up with the third goal in the 66th minute.

Sirat Jahan Shopna scored the solitary goal for Bangladesh in the 38th minute.

The championship was organised by Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad in association with the All India Football Federation and Indian Football Association.

India has hosted the SAFF championship for the first time. Maldives, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal were the other participants of the 2016 championship.

Also known as the South Asian Football Federation Women’s Cup, it is the primary association football competition of the women’s national football teams governed by the South Asian Football Federation.
