Continuing with its denouncement of the Centre's demonetisation move, the Darjeeling District Mahila Congress today organised a Bhuka Michil (hunger march) from Baghajatin Park to Venus More in Siliguri.

Party supporters including tea garden female workers were led by Matigara – Naxalbari MLA Shankar Malakar and other local leaders. They beat utensils and appeared to consume them to show how people are going hungry due to the demonetisation decision and the insufficient supply of lower denomination notes. The rally participants blocked the intersection at Hashmi Chowk, Venus More for five minutes and burnt the effigy of the prime minister.

A meeting was held in the evening at Hashmi Chowk where former Siliguri Mayor Gangotri Dutta, and senior Congress leader Jiban Majumdar were also present.
