A part of a multi-storeyed building fell off in Collegepara, Siliguri on Tuesday morning after torrential rainfall since last two days. No casualties have been reported in the incident.
Sources state that there was initially a tin house atop the two-storeyed building. The tin house had been demolished and a permanent construction was planned in place of it.
The entire building was being reconstructed for the new addition. In the morning around 11 o’ clock today, a part of the building fell off on the road during the time of the construction work.
The Tourism Minister of the state, Goutam Deb visited the area and took stock of the situation. Currently, the road is being cleared off all boulders and debris.
The incident occurred close to Deb’s residence. On receiving the news, he reached the area to review the situation. He also spoke with the people while he was there.
While speaking to the media, Deb blamed the Municipality for the incident. “I had sent multiple letters to them about investigating the shops that are situated right in front of residences. I had also asked them to review if the city’s buildings are constructed as per the legal rules,” he said.
The minister has alleged that the Municipality did not take any steps even after receiving all the letters from him.
“The Mayor only travels to China and tells his travel stories in various countries. He is not doing the work that he is supposed to do. A similar incident took place in Khalpara as well. There are many buildings around the city that are in a dicey condition. Despite all of this, the corporation does not act on taking appropriate measures,” said Deb.
