World heritage day and neglected oldest and iconic Siliguri Town Station

With the world celebrating World Heritage in the name of International Day of Monuments and Sites, government has neglected to preserve Siliguri’s oldest railway station Siliguri Town Station which gave birth to Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
As DHR is busy with the up-gradation of coaches into AC and making different strategies to attract tourist in this region the UNESCO accorded heritage status Siliguri Town station has become a safer place for gamblers, stray animals, drug addicts, alcoholics and anti-social elements.
The historic town station started functioning on 23rd August 1880 is in deplorable condition with building almost in verge of collapse and garbage thrown all around its premises.
According to historians Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Subash Chandra Bose and other legendaries passing through this station while travelling to Darjeeling use to feel proud but now the international tourists has to cover their noses due to bad smell in the area.
Raj Basu, convener of Association for Conservation of Tourism said, “The Town station mother of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is being neglected. The time has come when the world is interested to see the new look of the station and preserve its heritage site. Sadly such an iconic place is looking its popularity and the government should think over it. Along with the up-gradation of railway should also preserve the station.”
Railway authorities informed that as nearly 35 trains including long-distance trains passes through the town station on daily basis and also acknowledged needs of cleaning the area to restore the glory of the station.
